Ayurveda is a knowledge of life (Ayur = life, Veda = science/knowledge)

Lifestyle

Ancient sages have explained powerful day-to-day regimens labeled as “Dinacharya” to possess a healthy life. Following day-to-day Ayurvedic regimens would keep your circadian rhythm in harmony. Circadian rhythm is an internal body clock that influences our body to rest, wake, eat and perform numerous functions.

Ayurveda suggests waking in “Brahmamuhurta.” It is the time approximately one and a half hour before sunrise. The hormones like cortisol and serotonin are at their peak in the morning. Cortisol is high at this time to deal with the stress of waking up. On the other hand, serotonin is highest in the morning and its secretion can be activated by a stroll outside in the morning sun rays for at least half an hour. It is responsible for the good mood, appetite, and good memory. So for the kick start of your day wake up early in the morning.

Ayurveda suggests drinking water early in the morning is a healthy habit to avoid many ailments. Water is a natural detoxifier and refreshes the body. This way it stimulates the digestion power known as “Agni.” This healthy habit fends off the digestive ailments and stimulates the bowel movements. It also helps to remove the toxins from the body.

Squatting position helps to defecate easily and completely. This position places knees closer to the trunk and relaxes the rectum to defecate completely. It creates pressure required for defecation in the abdomen. It also compresses colon which creates the natural urge to defecate. On the other hand, sitting position obstructs the passage of faeces and you may have to strain to pass the stool.

Oil pulling is the act of swishing oil inside the mouth and then spitting it out. This act increases the mechanical pressure & triggers the reflexes (pressoreceptors) present inside the mouth. Due to this, there will be a burst of saliva inside the mouth. Lysozyme enzyme present in the saliva stops the production of bacteria. This way oil pulling helps to keep the bad bacterias away from the mouth and also strengthens the jaw and mandible.

According to Ayurveda, massage is known as “Abhyanga.” Massage is done with various varieties of oil according to the body type or ailment. Massaging every day yourself before bath helps to improve the blood circulation. It relieves stress in the body & eases the muscle stiffness and pain. It also encourages the lymphatic drainage which throws the toxins out through the skin.

Diet

According to the Ayurveda, fill ⅓ rd of the stomach with solid foods other ⅓ rd with liquids and keep the rest of  ⅓ rd empty. Ayurveda does not tell any benchmark for the quantity of the food, it all depends on the strength of your digestive fire. Even if you are eating something with light quality (like moong dal) should also be consumed in limited quantity only.

Ayurveda believes that eating curd at night creates imbalance inside the body. Our body is already predominant with Kapha dosha during the night time. Due to this, consumption of curd at night could lead to excess mucus formation. Eating curd at night should be especially avoided by the ones suffering from asthma and cold. Anyhow if someone is a huge fan of eating curd at night then it can be consumed occasionally with added black pepper.

Eating almonds are beneficial for skin, hairs, maintaining weight, reducing cholesterol, and regulating glucose levels. But it is better to peel the skin of almonds before eating it. Skin of the almonds contains tannin which cannot be digested by our system & also prohibits the absorption. Eating soaked & peeled almonds helps to absorb all the nutrients present in the almonds.

Ghee is considered the most healthy fat in Ayurveda. It is filled with Butyrate which is a short chain fatty acid. Being a short chain fatty acid ghee helps to regulate the fat metabolism. It burns the fat from the stubborn areas and decreases the excess fat of the body. This way it helps to reduce the excess weight and maintain the healthy weight of the body.

As per Ayurveda, night meal should be taken before or around the sunset. The metabolism of the body is not same in the night time as that in the daytime. It becomes hard to digest a certain type of foods at night when the body is prepared to shut down. Eating dinner around sunset helps to lose weight & maintains good energy level for the next day. On the other hand, the practice of late-night dinner slows down the metabolism and lead to various diseases.

Honey & ghee should never be taken in equal quantity. The potency of honey is hot and the potency of ghee is cool. They both require different enzymes to digest. When these different enzymes combine during the digestion process they form toxin. It later leads to indigestion. So it is always better to avoid these two together.
