What is the Ayurvedic lifestyle?

Ayurvedic lifestyle means to live a healthy life to keep your doshas (energies) on the track. According to Ayurveda, our body is composed of the three main doshas named – Vata, Pitta, and Kapha. Doshas are the basic bioenergies present inside the body. Each one of them is responsible for the physiological functions of mind & body.

Before following the Ayurvedic lifestyle, you must understand a little bit about the Ayurvedic dosha clock.

Ayurveda explains a particular time to do some specific activities, such as waking up in the morning, sleeping at night, eating meals, practicing yoga, meditation, taking a bath, doing work, and others.

All such activities have significance according to the dominance of doshas (bioenergies) during day and night inside your body. Your energy levels and mental clarity depends upon the time of the day. As you must have observed, the amount of physical energy and mental clarity you have in the daytime is not equal to the evening’s energy levels. Habituating a lifestyle routine according to each dosha’s predominance in the day and night will help you to tune with nature.

Ayurveda has split 24 hours into six groups of four-hour zones, where one among these doshas are naturally dominant during each period. One has to follow particular lifestyle activities during these hours to maintain their health.

Kapha time: 6 AM to 10 AM

Pitta time: 10 AM to 2 PM

Vata time: 2 PM to 6 PM

Kapha time: 6 PM to 10 PM

Vata Dominant Hour in the morning (2 am to 6 am)

Vata is free-flowing energy. Ayurveda advises to wake up early in the morning and enjoy the impact of Vata energy on the body that is naturally influential during these hours. Before having conversations with your family members or dealing with the world, you must spend this time just with yourself by practicing Ayurvedic morning rituals like yoga, meditation, and others. Waking up early in the morning and practicing yoga and meditation will help you achieve mental clarity and strength.

Kapha Dominant Hour in the morning (6 am to 10 am)

Kapha is heavy and dense energy. For this reason, it is advised to eat light food items during these hours. Eating a heavy morning meal could lead to heaviness and lethargy. So, you should always keep your breakfast light and nourishing.

Pitta Dominant Hour in the day time (10 am to 2 pm)

Pitta energy is responsible for digestion and transformation. As the digestive fire is stronger during these hours, you should eat the most substantial meal during these hours.

Eating a large meal during this time, satisfies your hunger and keeps you full for the day. But, do not misunderstand the term “large meal” here with overeating. Here a large meal means the biggest meal of the day compared to the morning and night meal. So, eat a large meal during this period but avoid overeating.

Vata Dominant Hour in the afternoon (2 pm to 6 pm)

Vata energy is naturally high during these hours makes you feel light and energetic. It is only possible only if you have not done overeating in your lunchtime.

It is ideal to use this time by accomplishing something creative. The most significant character of a Vata person is that they are naturally creative and artistic. It is because of the high Vata energy inside their body.

If you also love doing something creative like writing, singing, dancing, sketching, or any artwork, you can try it during these hours. A high Vata energy during these hours will help you achieve your imaginative errand with less exertion and time.

Kapha Dominant Hour in the evening (6 pm to 10 pm)

Another important thing is to consume your supper before 6 pm because Kapha energy is of heavy quality, and eating food during these hours can cause you to feel heavy and sluggish. Our digestive system gets somewhat inactive during these hours, which causes indigestion. It later or sooner becomes the reason behind weight gain, hormonal imbalance, laziness, and others.

Eating food before Kapha time in the evening digests the food properly. It also prevents the risk of several health issues like overweight, high blood sugar levels, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and others.

If this is not possible for you to practice, make sure to eat a very light meal after 6 pm. Doing so will help you reduce belly fat, overcome overweight, balance hormones, bring lightness, boost energy, and get rid of various other lifestyle disorders.

Pitta Dominant Hour in the night and early morning (10 am to 2 am)

Pitta is the energy responsible for the transformation and repair inside the body. Night time is the period when your body repairs itself while you are sleeping. During these hours, waking up can hamper the repair process. People who sleep late at night are at higher risk of developing disorders like PCOS, obesity, anxiety, diabetes, depression, heart disease, and metabolic disorders.
