Rheumatoid arthritis is an inflammatory disease of the joints. It is an autoimmune disease that occurs due to the failure of the body’s defense system. When the body’s immune system falsely starts attacking joints it leads to inflammation in the lining of joints. It results in pain and swelling on that area. Initially, it affects small joints like hands and feet. Once the disease starts progressing it affects knee, ankles, hip, wrist joints as well.

In rheumatoid arthritis, usually, it symmetrically affects the joints. Along with the pain, morning stiffness also occurs which may last for more than one hour. It is better to diagnose it as early as possible to avoid later complications. If not taken care properly, it may damage the bone cartilage and even affect other organs.

  • Pain, swelling, stiffness in the joints: For 6 weeks or more

The symptoms of RA are relatable to Amavata. It is a condition that arises due to aggravated vata and excessive ama (toxins) inside the body. As per Ayurveda, such condition occurs due to the weak digestive fire.

Home remedies to manage RA:

Langhana Therapy:

Langhana is fasting therapy. It is one of the best methods to reduce ama (toxins) from the body. In such condition, complete fasting or else one can go on a semi-solid or liquid diet. Fasting helps to digest the undigested food and as a result, ama starts reducing from the body. As much as ama (toxin) will reduce from body it will give relief from the symptoms.

It is better to practice fasting under the guidance of your Ayurvedic physician. 

Heat Therapy:

Applying hot packs or taking hot water bath may help to reduce morning stiffness. It balances vata that ultimately gives some relief.

Cold Therapy:

Apply cold ice packs only when there are acute pain and swelling. It helps to reduce inflammation. Due to this one may feel a little comfort. Keep it over the affected joint for 10 to 15 minutes only. Do not apply it in case of stiffness. 

Rest & Physical Activity:

If a patient is suffering from inflammation of the joints and feeling fatigue then rest is a must. Otherwise, simple form of exercises like walking and some yoga asanas can be done. It will maintain the flexibility of joints. Also, to manage morning stiffness, stretching the affected joints slowly is an effective way.

Ginger Tea

Ginger is one among the best herb for digestion. It helps to reduce ama (toxins) from the body. Its regular consumption shows quite good results. 

How to make it?

  • Boil one cup of water along with a piece of ginger.
  • For good results, one must consume it every day

Black Pepper:

Black pepper has anti-inflammatory. Due to this property, it is good to use it in such conditions.

Diet & Lifestyle

Diet:

  • Prefer light and easily digestible food items.
  • Avoid cold and refrigerated food and drinks.
  • Eat fresh and homemade meals only.

Lifestyle:

  • Avoid late-night waking up
  • Do not suppress natural urges.
