Ayurveda has given prime importance to the care of mother from pregnancy to delivery. Not only that, it has equally valued the period of post-delivery. As per Ayurveda, a new mother is known as Sutika. The period after delivery to 6 weeks is termed as Sutika Kala. This is a period of regaining body’s strength after delivery.

During this phase, exhaustive physical activities and improper diet may lead to fatal diseases. For that reason, Ayurveda has explained Sutika Paricharya (सूतिका परिचर्या). It includes dietary and lifestyle regimens. Following those regimens helps a new mother to naturally regain her mental and physical health. Here are a few tips to recover naturally after delivery:

DIET

Diet is a very important part of Sutika Paricharya. After delivery diet must fulfill the following requirements:

  • Restore health
  • Induce breastmilk
  • Support digestion

Ayurveda recommends warm and oily food substances with sweet, sour, and salty taste. A simple homemade seasonal food will help to restore health. Along with that few Ayurvedic herbs and spices may help to support digestion and improve breastmilk production.

LIFESTYLE

Rest:

Rest is must during this period. It is advised to take rest for a minimum of 6 weeks after delivery. Let your body recover itself naturally and steadily.

Warm Environment:

Keep yourself warm with food and clothes. It will help to recover soon.

Follow below said:

  • Drink warm water
  • Wear warm clothes
  • Keep your home warm
  • Take a bath with warm water

Avoid below said:

  • Cold food
  • Cold drinks
  • Air conditioner

Following and avoiding above-said will help to balance your Vata dosha.

Oil Massage:

Massage is essential during Sutika Kala (post delivery phase). It helps to improve blood circulation. Above all, it strengthens the muscles and bones.

Abdominal Tightening (उद्वेष्टन)

As per Ayurveda, wrapping the abdominal area with cotton cloth or belt is called as उद्वेष्टन. It supports the back and abdomen. Due to this, it prevents backache and tightens the abdomen muscles.

Advised duration for abdominal tightening : 4 to 5 hours

For Caeserean Section: Wrap only after wound is healed properly (aproximately after 6 to 8 weeks).
